Mobile IT for Construction Crews | Field Device Management & Remote Access

IT for a Workforce That Never Sits Still

Construction teams move between jobsites, the main office, and client locations daily. Superintendents carry tablets loaded with plan sets. Project managers review budgets from the trailer. Foremen submit daily reports from the field. Safety officers document inspections on their phones. Every one of these activities depends on technology that works outside a traditional office — and every device is a potential entry point for an attacker.

We manage the mobile technology that construction workforces actually use, with security controls designed for the realities of field work.

Mobile Device Management

Tablets and rugged smartphones are standard equipment on modern construction sites. Without proper management, these devices become a liability — outdated software, no encryption, no ability to wipe data if a device is left on a jobsite or stolen from a truck.

Our MDM deployment covers:

  • Automated enrollment — New devices are configured with your apps, security policies, and Wi-Fi credentials before they reach the field
  • App management — Procore, PlanGrid, Bluebeam, safety apps, and time-tracking tools are pushed to devices and kept updated without requiring the user to do anything
  • Encryption enforcement — Every managed device has storage encryption enabled; data at rest is protected even if the hardware is physically compromised
  • Remote wipe — Lost or stolen devices can be wiped within minutes, erasing project data, credentials, and cached files
  • Compliance monitoring — Devices that fall out of compliance (jailbroken, missing updates, unsigned apps) are flagged and can be quarantined automatically

Remote Access to Project Systems

Field teams need access to the same systems that the office uses — estimating software running on a server at headquarters, shared project drives, accounting platforms, and document management systems. Driving back to the office to check a number is not a realistic workflow.

We configure secure remote access through two approaches depending on your environment:

  • VPN with split tunneling — Field users connect to headquarters resources through an encrypted tunnel. Split tunneling ensures that only business traffic routes through your network, preserving bandwidth for project-critical applications
  • Zero-trust network access (ZTNA) — Each application is individually authenticated and authorized, so a compromised device or credential doesn’t grant broad network access. This is the direction most construction firms are moving as cloud adoption increases

Both approaches integrate with your managed IT environment and include MFA enforcement so a stolen password alone is not enough to access your systems.

Field Data Capture

Construction generates enormous volumes of field data: progress photos, daily logs, safety inspection checklists, quality control documentation, and punch list items. This data has to move from the field to the project record reliably.

We ensure your field data capture workflows are configured for construction conditions:

  • Offline capability — Apps are configured so field crews can capture data without a network connection; entries sync automatically when connectivity is restored
  • Photo and video management — High-resolution jobsite photos consume significant storage; we configure cloud backup and compression policies that preserve quality while managing device storage
  • Digital forms and checklists — Safety inspections, daily reports, and QC documentation flow directly into your project management platform instead of sitting in someone’s email
  • GPS tagging — Photos and inspection records are automatically tagged with location data, creating a defensible project record tied to specific areas of the site

BYOD vs. Company-Issued Devices

Construction firms often struggle with the decision between providing company devices and allowing workers to use personal phones and tablets. Each approach has tradeoffs.

Company-issued devices give you full control — you own the hardware, set the policies, and wipe the device when someone leaves. The cost is higher, but the security posture is stronger and endpoint detection coverage is consistent.

BYOD reduces hardware costs and is preferred by many field workers who don’t want to carry two phones. The tradeoff is reduced control. We deploy containerized MDM solutions that create a separate work profile on personal devices — your company data lives in an encrypted container that can be wiped independently without touching the employee’s personal photos or apps.

Most construction companies we work with use a hybrid model: company-issued tablets for superintendents and project managers who access sensitive data daily, BYOD with containerization for foremen and tradespeople who primarily use time-tracking and communication apps.

Security for Mobile Construction Workers

Mobile devices in construction face higher physical risk than office equipment. Devices are left in unlocked trailers, dropped on concrete, and used by multiple people during the workday. A security strategy that relies on users being careful won’t work.

Our mobile security approach includes:

  • Mandatory MFA — Every remote session requires a second factor, protecting against credential theft
  • Geofencing — Access policies can restrict sensitive applications to known jobsite and office locations
  • Automatic lockout — Devices lock after a short idle period; unlock requires PIN, biometric, or both
  • Lost device protocolHelp desk support is available to immediately lock and wipe reported lost devices, with the ability to track last known location
  • Phishing protection — Mobile-specific email filtering and URL scanning catch threats that target smaller screens where suspicious links are harder to spot

Back to Construction IT Services

We deploy a mobile device management platform that enrolls every device — company-owned or BYOD — with your security policies, required apps, and Wi-Fi configurations. Devices are monitored for compliance, apps are updated automatically, and lost or stolen devices can be wiped remotely within minutes.

Most construction companies use a hybrid approach. Key personnel (superintendents, project managers) get company-issued tablets with full endpoint protection. Field workers who only need time-tracking and communication apps use personal devices with a containerized work profile that keeps company data separate and wipeable.

We configure either VPN or zero-trust network access depending on your environment. Field users authenticate with multi-factor authentication and connect to headquarters applications through an encrypted session. Cloud-based platforms like Procore are accessed directly with single sign-on. On-premise systems like Sage 300 CRE are accessible through secure remote desktop or published application sessions.

They call the help desk and we initiate a remote wipe immediately. All project data, cached credentials, and company apps are erased from the device. Because backups run continuously to the cloud, no project data is lost — only the hardware. If the device is company-owned, we can also track its last known GPS location.
